Colorful Valparaiso. Link to blog entry
The city of Valparaiso is spread out over forty-three hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The houses are crazily built up the hillsides and there is a labyrinth of staircases that go up, down, and across the constructions which are sometimes reminiscent of Rio’s favelas. But unlike Rio, Valparaiso is not violent or very dangerous. Exploring the streets and stairways is a fascinating pursuit that would take many years, if not a lifetime. For those unwilling or unable to climb the steps, there is a network of ancient elevators or ‘Ascensores’ that creakily traverse the steep grades, giving the rider amazing views.
