It is hard to define what makes a place a good place to stay. Some of the most enjoyable places we have stayed in have been really cheap, such as El Retiro Lodge in Guatemala. Others have been very expensive, such as Luna Lodge in the Osa peninsula in Costa Rica. For us, its a combination of character, nice owners. comfort, location and price. All these combined form a nebulous “bang-for-the-buck” factor, which is an indication of how much we enjoy the place.

Brisas del Mar Corcovado 278, Chaitén [Chile]. Brisas del Mar had comfortable cabañas, but this is not what made it exceptional. This hotel was only one of two operating in Chaitén after the volcano of the same name erupted. The whole town was full of ashes, drinking water and electricity had been cut off and services were few. In the hotel, we had hot running water, electricity in the evening and solicitous owners who were very considerate of our comfort inspite of the troubles they were facing. |

Casa de Grillos (closed 2017), Calafate [Argentina]. Run by a retired professor of philosophy and his wife, this is a very welcoming, small B&B. Very accommodating, friendly and comfortable, it is an oasis in a very touristy place. |

Condor de Plata, Punta Arenas [Chile]. A simple hotel in Punta Arenas run by a very special person. Nico will help you with almost anything from suggesting places to buy shredded tires to replacing your shredded shoes. He will also provide you with many hours of entertaining stories. |

Las Restingas, Puerto Piramides [Argentina]. A beautiful location right on the beach in Puerto Piramides, the prime location to watch whales. We were not there during the whale season, when I understand it is Mecca for whale watchers when whales come right into the bay to train their young. |

Bed and Breakfast, Tandil [Argentina]. This charming B&B is made irresistible by the owner. Judy is full of energy, helpful and advise you all the best places to visit in Tandil. Just talking with her is a pleasure. |
